One of Denis Villeneuve's best movies, Blade Runner 2049, is finally getting a follow-up. Despite Ridley Scott's 1982 Blade Runner's disappointing run at the box office, the movie became a bona fide cult hit, inspiring not only an entirely new neo-noir film aesthetic but also influencing science fiction filmmaking and storytelling for decades. Based on Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Blade Runner's worldbuilding offered the perfect foundation for a major genre franchise, though it's taken a while for it to attain that status.
