As a new year begins, a list of notable works and characters becomes public domain material, including one of Disney's most iconic figures and a landmark novel from Agatha Christie. Generally, in the U.S., a work remains copyrighted for 95 years if published before 1978, or for 70 years following the creator's death if published after this date.
