Series premieres aren't always indicative of a TV show's potential, and so it proved with Star Trek: The Original Series. Over the years, plenty of iconic shows have started with a weak or downright average episode, only to ascend toward greatness after getting warmed up. Far more commonly, a TV show will start with a bang before entering a gradual decline in quality, never quite living up to its early promise.
